
How to Stop Squeaky Floors Without Guesswork
A floor rarely squeaks because it is old. It squeaks because two materials are moving against each other: a board rubbing a joist, a loose fastener shifting in wood, or subfloor panels flexing at a seam. Knowing how to stop squeaky floors starts with locating that movement, rather than simply driving screws into the nearest noisy spot.
For homeowners, a squeak can be a small daily irritation or an early sign that a floor system needs attention. Most are repairable without replacing the entire floor. The right repair depends on your floor covering, access from below, and the condition of the framing underneath.
Find the Exact Source of the Squeak
Before making a repair, identify the location as precisely as possible. Have one person walk slowly across the floor while another listens from below, if the ceiling is open or a basement provides access. Mark the noisy area with painter's tape on the finished floor. Test the spot from several directions, since the noise may occur only when weight is applied near one edge of a joist.
A squeak often changes depending on where someone stands. If it occurs over a broad area, the subfloor may be flexing between joists. If it is concentrated in one small location, a nail or screw may have loosened, allowing the subfloor to lift slightly when stepped on.
From below, look for gaps between the subfloor and floor joists, loose nails, cracked blocking, water staining, or joists that have been altered for plumbing and electrical work. Do not assume the visible spot is the whole issue. A careful inspection prevents a quick fix from becoming a repeat repair.
Why Floors Squeak in the First Place
Wood naturally expands and contracts with seasonal humidity changes. In homes with cold winters and dry indoor heating, minor movement can become more noticeable. That does not always mean there is structural damage. Still, movement between building materials should be addressed when it becomes persistent or worsens.
Common causes include subfloor panels that were not fully fastened to the joists, nails that have backed out over time, and hardwood boards rubbing against each other or against the subfloor. Carpeted floors can squeak when the subfloor shifts under the carpet and pad. Laminate or engineered flooring may make noise when an uneven subfloor allows the planks to flex.
Settlement can also contribute, particularly in older homes. A floor that feels soft, slopes noticeably, or has a growing gap should be assessed more closely than a simple occasional squeak. The goal is not just a quieter floor. It is a stable floor that protects the finish materials above it.
How to Stop Squeaky Floors From Below
Access from below is usually the best option because it allows repairs without disturbing the finished flooring. A basement, crawl space, or unfinished ceiling makes the job more straightforward and helps preserve hardwood, tile, carpet, or laminate.
Close Small Gaps at the Joist
If you can see a narrow gap between the subfloor and a joist, apply construction adhesive along the joint. For a larger gap, use a thin wood shim coated with adhesive. Slide it in gently until it contacts both surfaces. Do not force a shim into place, as lifting the subfloor can create a hump or damage the finished floor above.
Once the adhesive cures, the shim supports the subfloor and reduces movement. This method works well when the framing is sound but the subfloor has separated slightly from the joist.
Add Screws Where the Subfloor Has Lifted
When the subfloor is loose, drive short wood screws upward through the joist and into the subfloor. The screw must be short enough that it cannot penetrate the finished floor. Measure carefully before starting. In many cases, a 1 1/4-inch screw is appropriate for a 3/4-inch subfloor, but material thicknesses vary, so there is no substitute for confirming the assembly first.
Place screws near the squeak, keeping them centered in the joist. Screws pull the subfloor tight more reliably than nails, which can loosen with repeated movement. Avoid installing too many fasteners in one area. A few properly placed screws are better than randomly fastening every inch of the floor.
Reinforce Seams and Blocking
If the squeak occurs at the edge of a subfloor panel, the seam may lack adequate support. Adding solid blocking between joists can stiffen that area. Apply construction adhesive where the blocking meets the subfloor, then secure it to the joists with screws or nails.
This is a more involved repair, but it is often the correct solution for a floor that flexes near a seam. It also demonstrates why a squeak is not always a surface-level problem. The framing details below the floor matter.
Repairs From Above Require More Care
When there is no access from below, repairs may need to be made through the finished floor. This can be effective, but it carries a greater risk of visible damage. The method should match the floor covering.
For carpet, specialized breakaway screw systems can secure the subfloor to the joist through the carpet without leaving a prominent screw head. The key is finding the joist first. A stud finder designed to detect framing through flooring can help, but confirm the joist location by testing carefully. A screw driven between joists may tighten nothing and can damage wiring or plumbing if it is too long.
For hardwood floors, face-screwing is usually a last resort because it leaves a visible repair. In some cases, a finish carpenter can place fasteners discreetly, fill the holes with matching wood filler, and touch up the finish. This is best reserved for a localized issue where preserving the floor is more practical than lifting boards.
Laminate and engineered floating floors present a different challenge. If the noise comes from an uneven or damaged subfloor, fastening through the planks is not the right fix. The flooring may need to be removed so the subfloor can be leveled, secured, or repaired properly. This is more labor-intensive, but it avoids compromising a floating-floor system that needs room for normal expansion.
Avoid Common Quick Fixes
Powders, lubricants, and temporary fillers are sometimes suggested for noisy floors. They may reduce rubbing between surface boards for a short time, but they do not correct loose subflooring or deficient framing. Oil-based products can also stain wood, attract dirt, or interfere with future refinishing.
Be cautious with expanding foam as well. Foam can fill a void, but it is not a structural repair and may create pressure where it is not wanted. It should not replace shims, blocking, or proper fastening when the floor is moving.
A repair can also fail when screws are chosen without checking their length. A fastener that reaches through hardwood, tile, or another finished surface turns a small squeak into a more expensive repair. Taking time to inspect the floor assembly is part of quality workmanship.
When a Squeak Needs Professional Attention

The cost of protecting quality finish materials is often far less than the cost of replacing them after an unsuccessful repair.
